Here are a few activities we did the last few weeks of school.
Continuing with our ABC countdown...
O: Origami Day...I taught my kids to make these fortune tellers (which they actually did surprisingly well with!) For those who aren't familiar with these, they ask someone to pick a color. Then the spell the color while moving the fortune teller for each letter. Then that person picks a number...they move it that many times (I changed it and had them spell the number word)...then they pick another number and you lift up the flap and read the fortune inside. Well the week we did these, our spelling words were number words. And the week before they were color words. So basically I TRICKED them into practicing their spelling words! MWAHAHA. I love tricking them into learning :)
R: Rainbow Day...We learned the colors of the rainbow using ROY G BIV and did a little craftivity with that. We also spelled our spelling words using fruit loops!
S: Space Day...I don't have a picture of this...but I wanted to document the idea for future reference. I bought those little containers of knee high hose at walmart. We used the hose for something else last year and I kept the containers. Well, if you turn them upside down so the lid is on the table, they look like spaceships! I wrote an addition or subtraction sentence on each 'spaceship' and placed them all around the room. They had to walk around and find the spaceships and record the answers on their paper.
In math we learned how to measure things. We learned that we can measure with nonstandard measurements (measuring with blocks, paper clips, hands, etc.) and standard measurements (rulers, scales, thermometers, etc.) My FAVORITE activity we did was measuring with blocks. I gave them a list of things they had to measure (height of their desk, height of the trash can, length of the sink, height of their buddy, etc.) and then they got to measure 3 things of their choice. This activity was LOUD but I didn't care because everyone was engaged and having fun. And oh my, you should have heard the giggles and squeals when some of them decided they wanted to measure their teacher (!!!). I'm just glad the principal didn't walk in during all of this...he would have walked into a noisy classroom with blocks EVERYWHERE and the teacher laying on the floor with students lining up blocks next to her. Ha!
