2011-2012 Favorite Quotes

My kids this year also had a lot of 'personality'...and that made for some pretty hilarious moments. It's impossible for me to remember all of the funny things from this year...there are just too many! But I wanted to post the ones that I do remember.

During writing time at the beginning of the year, I was helping one of my students sound out a word. He wrote the wrong letter and scribbled it out. I asked him why he didn't just erase it. He then erases it and says "Woah, I didn't even know you could do that!

Student: "I don't have to bring my lunch to school anymore."
Teacher: "Oh yeah? Why is that?"
Student: "Because the government pays for my lunch now. The government has more money than anyone else. They have so much money that they buy everyone's lunches for them."

During journal time, one of my boys (who is a UTES fan) wrote 'The UTES won the game' and drew a picture of someone crying.
Teacher: "Weren't you happy that the UTES won?"
Student: "Yes, I was very happy! And so was Jesus. This is a picture of Jesus crying because he is so happy they won."

We were taking a math assessment so I told my students to put their folders up to prevent wandering eyes. One of my students...who sits on the end of the row...was trying to put up a folder and a notebook so that both sides of his paper were guarded.
Teacher: "You only have 1 person sitting next to you, so you only need to worry about that one side being covered."
Student: "No, there are 2 people sitting next to me. Her (the girl sitting next him) AND the Holy Ghost!"

One of my students was asking me who invented certain things (electricity, robots, etc). After asking me a few he says "Well, everyone knows who invented the beetle. God did! And EVERYONE knows him!"

Student: "Did you know that damn with an 'oh' in front of it is a swear word?"
(This was a comment made to another student. Luckily I overheard it and was able to inform him that 'damn' by itself was the swear word...otherwise he probably would have walked around all day saying it thinking he wasn't swearing! haha)

One of the students from a different 1st grade class came and read with me in one of my reading groups. The book we were reading had a picture of a cat sleeping by a pond.
Student: "Cats don't like water. But when Jesus comes again they will. When Jesus comes they will PLAY in the water!"

The aide I had was clearly older than me. She's in her 40s I believe. She's also very short. She made a comment about her being older than me and one of my students looked at us with a shocked expression and said "WHAT? You are older than Mrs. Abeyta?! But she's so much huge-er than you!"

We had 1st grade rotations one day so I had a different class in my room. When my class came back, one of my students took out his pencil...this was the conversation that followed.
Student 1 "Why does my pencil box look different?" (all fo the crayons were lined up neatly inside)
Student 2 "Someone must have taken your crayons out and put them back so sweetly and gently!"

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Student: "Mrs. Abeyta, I'm not excited for the last day of school."
Teacher: "Why not?"
Student: "Because we aren't learning the last day of school. We are only having a party. And I want to learn!"
