List Poems and -ate Words

I decided I need to start blogging about things we do at school so that hopefully I will be better at remembering exactly what I do from year to year. This summer I'm going to start a classroom blog...but for now, I'll be posting on here!

April is poetry month! Therefore, we did our poetry unit a couple of weeks ago. I taught my kids how to write list poems. They LOVED it! Each of them wrote 1 for 'popcorn' and when they got done, I had quite a few students that chose to get blank paper and write more. I had one student that wrote TONS of poems which I ended up stapling together into a poem book :) Love it when they get so excited about things we do!

Here are a few of the list poems some of my kids wrote.

Love the spelling of 'Shih Tzu' (spelled Shit Shose) in this one...funny!

One of our word families that same week was the -ate family. The kids had a stack of cards with a word written on each one. If it was in the -ate family, they put it on their plate. If it wasn't, they put it in the discard pile. After they were done sorting their cards, they got to write their -ate words on their plate with a marker.
